Meet the Artisans

The Hands Behind Every Piece

Behind every chess set and handcrafted creation from Things From Africa is a story of passion, perseverance, and generational skill. Our pieces are brought to life by a dedicated team of skilled artisans, each with their own story and craft.

Two artisans working on handcrafted wooden chessboards

At the workshop, chessboards take shape one detail at a time. This photo captures two artisans at work on boards, a glimpse of the process behind the finished pieces.

Every member of the team has a story worth telling. Yoab’s journey is one of them: from learning woodcraft as a child to making chess sets and custom pieces today.

Meet Yoab Namach — Master Craftsman from Zomba, Malawi

Watch Yoab share his journey in his own words.

Yoab Namach was just nine years old when he first picked up the tools of his trade, learning the art of woodcraft from his father in Zomba, Malawi. More than 30 years later, that childhood apprenticeship has blossomed into a lifetime of mastery — and every piece he creates carries that legacy.

Yoab specialises in handcrafted chess sets, chess boards, and bespoke craft work of all kinds. When he is asked to make a design he has not tried before, he studies it and works out how to bring it to life. His willingness to take on custom requests is part of what makes his work special.

A Journey of Perseverance

The path was not always easy. When Yoab and a group of friends first set out to sell their craft work, they faced the very real challenges that confront so many artisans: poor market access and products priced too low to sustain a living. Over time, some of his friends were forced to walk away. But Yoab persevered — along with a small, dedicated group — and built something lasting.

That resilience is woven into every item he makes.

Sustainably Sourced, Responsibly Crafted

Yoab and his team source their materials with deep respect for the environment. They venture into the bush to carefully select timber stumps that would otherwise go to waste — wood that has already served its natural purpose. And every year, they plant new trees to replenish what nature provides, ensuring that the craft can continue for generations to come.

When you purchase from Things From Africa, you are not just buying a beautiful object. You are supporting a tradition, a livelihood, and a sustainable future — shaped by hands that have dedicated a lifetime to their craft.
